Beimen District is located on E 120° 0' 42" and N 23° 6' 36”. The area of the district is 44.1003 km² (8.4 km from east to west, 12 km from north to south) and is shaped like an irregular rectangle. Beimen District is located at the most northwest coastline of Tainan City. The land was formed by gradual mud accumulation in the former Taijiang Lagoon. The district adjoins Xuejia District to the east and the Taiwan Strait to the west. Jiangjun River marks the border between Beimen and Jiangjun District in the south; and Bajhang River runs in the north between Beimen District and Yizhu Township and Budai Township of Chiayi County. Jishuei River runs through our township and into the Taiwan Strait

 

The primary production of mangroves in the swamps of Beimen District is pretty high. However, due to challenging environments and drastic changes in tides, humidity and salinity, most consumers cannot survive for long in this unstable environment. Consequently, the main characteristic of the local ecosystem is “little diversity, large in quantity”.

1.      There are about 14 kinds of crabs, mainly fiddler crabs. Mangrove crabs have a high economic value.

2.      There are 8 common types of shellfish found in the Beimen mangrove swamps. Hard clams have a high economic value, and oysters are prominent shellfish in farms.

3.      Mud skippers are the most common fish found in the swamp ecosystem.

4.      There are about 121 types of birds in the area. Most of them are migrant birds, such as black-winged stilts, Far Eastern curlews, black-tailed godwits and white-breasted waterhens. Main habitats include mangrove swamps and neighboring salt fields and fish farms.

 

Hydrology

Rivers in Beimen District include Bajhang River, Jishuei River, and Jiangjun River. Data (dissolved oxygen level, biochemical oxygen demand level, suspended solids, ammonia nitrogen) collected at various sites are utilized to calculate the PRIs of the rivers in order to monitor river pollution levels. According to the data analyses in the past years (1987 ~ 1996), Bajhang River is often moderately polluted. Its conditionalleviated between 1993 ~ 1996, but the river’s water quality still requires additional improvement. Jishuei River was usually moderately or severely polluted, and required additional improvement.

Weather

The district has a subtropical climate with warm temperatures, high humidity and a mild climate. It is very suitable for living and outdoor recreation.
